Kenya: The Next Stop on Our Journey Subscription

Some coffees are easy to enjoy. Others stop you in your tracks. Kenya is one of those coffees.

If you've been following along with our Journey Subscription, you already know that every month we feature a coffee that tells the story of a place, a people, and a unique coffee-growing tradition.

This month, we're heading to East Africa and exploring one of the most celebrated coffee origins in the world: Kenya.

For many coffee lovers, Kenya is the coffee that changes everything.

The first sip is unforgettable.

Bright.
Complex.
Vibrant.
Fruit-forward in a way that hardly seems possible from a coffee bean.

Why Coffee Grows So Well in Kenya

Kenya sits near the equator, but its coffee grows high in the mountains surrounding Mount Kenya. The combination of rich volcanic soil, high elevations, cool nights, warm days, and generations of farming expertise creates ideal conditions for producing extraordinary coffee. Kenyan coffees are often grown between 1,400 and 2,100 meters above sea level, allowing the coffee cherries to mature slowly and develop exceptional complexity.

Many of the country's most prized coffees come from regions such as Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, and Murang'a, where smallholder farmers carefully cultivate coffee on family farms.

What Does "Kenya AA" Mean?

Kenya AA is one of Kenya's highest bean size grades. The "AA" designation refers to the size of the coffee bean—not necessarily its quality. While larger beans don't automatically guarantee a better cup, many of Kenya's most celebrated coffees carry the AA grade and are prized for their bright fruit notes, lively acidity, and remarkable complexity.

What Does Kenya Coffee Taste Like?

Kenyan coffee is famous for flavors that are difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

Expect notes of:

  • Black currant

  • Blackberry

  • Red fruit

  • Citrus

  • Grapefruit

  • Wine-like brightness

  • Sweet caramelized sugars

The result is a cup that feels vibrant, juicy, and incredibly layered.

While many coffees lean toward chocolate, nuts, or caramel, Kenyan coffees often showcase bright berry and citrus characteristics that make each sip feel alive.

The Secret Behind Kenya's Distinctive Flavor

Kenya is also known for its unique double-washed processing method. After fermentation, the coffee receives an additional soak in fresh water before drying. This extra step helps create the exceptional clarity, brightness, and clean finish that Kenyan coffees are famous for.

Why We Chose Kenya for the Journey Subscription

The goal of our Journey Subscription has never been simply to send coffee. We want to help people experience the incredible diversity of coffee from around the world. Every origin tells a different story. Brazil brings comfort and balance. Ethiopia often showcases florals and tea-like elegance. Sumatra delivers deep earthiness and richness.

And Kenya? Kenya brings energy. It is bold without being overwhelming. Bright without being harsh. Complex without being confusing.

It is one of the most distinctive coffee experiences you'll find anywhere in the world.

Brewing Recommendations

To fully appreciate Kenya's complexity, we recommend brewing it as:

  • Pour Over

  • Chemex

  • Automatic Drip Brewer

These methods highlight the coffee's vibrant fruit character and clean finish.

As the coffee cools, you'll often discover new flavors emerging in the cup, making each brew a little different from the last.
